There are six different types of acne. Some are tougher to treat than others. Common whiteheads and blackheads, caused by blocked pores, generally go away with topical products. More difficult to treat: papules (raised, solid bumps) and pustules (papules with pus in them). Nodules and cysts, which form deep in the skin, can really hurt and are the most difficult to treat. Visit a dermatologist near you for advice.

Acne is caused by bacteria working themselves up on oily clogged pores. It is skin deep and cleansing is at the surface. The size and activity of the oil-producing gland is affected by hormone levels. Under certain circumstances the gland increases in size and produces more oil. Skin cells start to become "sticky" trapping pores. Bacteria known as P. acnes multiply and these factors result in spots. The treatment should be targeted at the source –below skin surface

"There is some evidence that consumption of dairy foods with a high GI-index can aggravate acne. Anecdotally, stress can aggravate many skin diseases, including acne, so finding methods of reducing this e.g. through exercise or meditation may indirectly have some benefit."

Skin should be washed– morning and evening with a cleanser specially formulated for acne containing salicylic acid, citric acid or benzoyl peroxide. After cleansing, gel-based moisturiser that is "non-comedogenic" as this prevents the formation of blackheads.
